Our company has been involved in the automotive industry for over 20 years. Very early on, we realised the importance of Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) diagnostics to this industry. The knowledge gained from working in this field also allowed us to see methods of adjusting conservative factory settings, to gain much higher levels of efficiency from EFI petrol engines. The lessons learnt from this past experience with Petrol engines can now also be applied to the new generation of EFI Diesels, and as the quality of Diesel available at the pump in Australia rises, so also the potential efficiency of these EFI Diesels also rises.

Any engine responds to increases in airflow

It is well known that any engine responds to increases in airflow either in or out of the engine, and there are many products, which can improve this (Hiclone, Performance air filter & exhaust). But on all EFI engines there is also a limit of how much more airflow the factory settings will cope with. By using sensors like Air Flow Meters (MAF), the engine's computer (ECU) will match the air/fuel ratio and create a new fuel map. The cars ECU will always re-adjust according to the percentage change in airflow. If that factory limit is reached then adding more airflow with extra products will only cause problems. We have seen people gain 10% with the 1st product, gain 5% with the 2nd product, then lose 10% with the 3rd product fitted and blame this product. It wasn't the products fault; it was just that the vehicle was unable to cope with any more improvements of efficiency, in its current state of tune.

Provide the correct air/fuel ratio

The solution to this problem is to electronically adjust the system to allow further gains in efficiency and again provide the correct air/fuel ratio. Some of our systems are user-adjustable; these are mainly for older variable pump style like the Landcruiser 100ser 4.2L TDI. This is because these older systems do not have modern Airflow sensors, and so they do not have the ability to read airflow increases. Modern Common Rail systems are more sophisticated and have a greater ability to self-tune. Our Tuning Boxes for these cars are pre-set and pre-tuned to the individual vehicle type, they are not user adjustable. But we can adjust these settings if required.
You must also note that all power gains listed were achieved on standard vehicles, with no other modifications. So the systems are also a “stand alone” modification, which when combined with other products, achieve further gains.

Tuning Overview: By www.morepower.com.au

All Electronic Engine Tuning comes in 3 types
Complete ECU replacement, which is very expensive and time consuming, in most case these are not available for Diesel engines. ECU Re-programming which is limited in its application. Or Interceptor Box also known as Tuning Box, this is the most flexible of the three and readily available in different levels of sophistication.

ECU Re-program – This was mainly for European vehicles, and until recently this was the best option. But for later vehicles the ECU is fitted with a Data counter, which tells the dealer it has been reprogrammed and Dealers can now overwrite the re-program during vehicle services. So the performance map needs to be re-installed after every service. The only way to bypass this Data counter is to open the ECU case and program direct to the circuit board. The MorePower Pocket Flash Programmer was a partial solution to this, allowing the customer to self-install either the standard or performance map. But it needs too many modifications to work on every car. Another problem with ECU reprogramming is that in many cases the performance map being installed in the car is Security-Coded; so even the installer does not have access to the contents, and cannot adjust it.

Diesel Tuning Boxes for Early Type Electronic Diesels
This covers most of the early Diesels, which have some Electronic control of the pump, but still use mechanical pressure operated injectors, including vehicles like Toyota Hilux & Prado 1KZ, Landcruiser 1HD, Rodeo, Patrol & Navara 3.0L motors. Most companies use the same Tuning Box to fit all of these, which are connected via separate wires, and take about an hour to fit. These are mainly fitted with Screwdriver or Jumper (like a fuse) Adjust Boxes. At Morepower we only use this type of box on the Toyota 1KZ & 1HD and early Mitsubishi & Jeep.
But fortunately for owners of Rodeo, Patrol & Navara 3.0L, which use the Bosch VP44 injection pump we have the Morepower TB-VP44 a Plug-in, 3D, PC Adjust box, which gives us the ability to tune these vehicles in the same way we tune a Common Rail engine, and can be installed in minutes.

Diesel Tuning systems for Common Rail Diesels

Fuel Pressure Control – This covers all boxes, which connect to the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. This sensor only transmits data related to Fuel Pressure (Ref: Robert Bosch) this is a variable 0-5volt signal. By plugging in between this sensor and the ECU. the Tuning Box adjusts this pressure signal before (up-stream) the signal reaches the ECU. Tricking the ECU into thinking the fuel pressure is lower than it really is. Most of these systems are screwdriver or jumper adjusted, and consist of a parallel-line adjustment, usually half a volt below the real signal. When this causes problems, Screwdriver boxes then need a PC tune to move this line either up or down further, or adjust the switch on/off points of the fuel pressure change. They sometimes confuse this on/off adjustment as Timing, but this has no connection to Injection Timing, the injector will not open any earlier unless the engine ECU tells it to, only the fuel pressure adjust point has changed.

But if the problem is too little fuel at one rpm point and too much fuel at another rpm point, this cannot be fixed with a Screwdriver type of box. Our Morepower TB-CRD box can fix this problem, it has a full 3D mapping curve, allowing us to independently increase or decrease fuelling at any point in the map. An example of this is the late model Navara D40 2.5L Auto, which runs too rich from the factory. When we tune this vehicle in standard form we give it a slight increase in fuel just above idle, to help the vehicle get moving. Then reduce fuel in mid range to give better cruise economy. Then again increase fuel at top end for full throttle acceleration. This gives good power and drivability and improves economy.

Injector Control – VAG (VW/Audi) have for a long time, used a system which is the reverse of the older systems, but is now going out of production. This used Electronically Controlled Injectors (Unit Injection), with the fuel pressure being mechanically created. The style of Tuning Box used for this type of injection, plugs to the injector (downstream of the ECU), and controls the amount of time the injector will remain open. A hybrid of this box is also used to control the injectors on full Common Rail engines. There are a few brands of Tuning Boxes, which can do this, but most work on the same parallel-line, Screwdriver or Jumper adjustment method. Our MorePower TB-CRPD box is the only one available with full 3D mapping, allowing us to independently increase or decrease fuelling at any RPM or Load point in the map.

Multi-Function Tuning Box – Our new MorePower TB-CRD2 Tuning Boxes contain multiple Map Chips, and have the ability to control different engine functions at the same time, and cross reference these functions with each other. The wiring looms come in a variety of designs, with the ability to plug into and control different engine functions, the same functions as an ECU re-program, but the box can be removed and re-installed at any time eg: services.
Screwdriver boxes only have a single function (Fuel Pressure only) and still only have a maximum of 10 points of adjustment. MorePower Multi-Function Tuning Boxes have over 2048 adjustment points (2 x 1024 point maps), controlling functions like:
Fuel Pressure Sensor which controls Fuel delivery
MAP Sensor which controls Turbo Boost for maintaining correct Air/Fuel ratio
Cam Angle Sensor which controls Injection Timing
Engine Temperature Sensor
Exhaust Temperature Sensor

What makes our system different?
The biggest problem with most Tuning Systems is that they use the same generic box and program on many different cars. But this is then a compromise on all of these cars. For example, even though a Hilux has the same engine as the Prado, the Prado has an intercooler, so it has different air temperatures; this requires a different fuel map. The Screwdriver Tuning systems claim to be directly transferable between totally different vehicles (no additional programming required). And yet also claim to be individually tuned to suit different vehicles. Screwdriver adjusted boxes do not properly compensate for modifications like exhaust, as we find that only certain parts of the map need adjusting, not the whole map moved up or down, so deciding which direction to turn the screw will always result in a compromise.
Only a person who understands our software, is permitted to tune our late model Morepower Tuning boxes with a PC. This is why our shops will not supply a Tuning Box off the shelf, all of our shops order boxes as required, and tuned to match your vehicle modifications. We have created different maps to match modifications like larger exhausts, larger tyres, LPG systems etc.. All of the Morepower PC adjusted Boxes also contain a Data Log function. So if the customer makes changes to the vehicle, they can run the vehicle for about a week after the modification, and then post the Tuning Box back. Our Morepower technician can read the change to the vehicle from the Data Log, and from this information, can make program adjustments, this service only costs $30 (AU$).

www.morepower.com.au is the only company,
which has all of these different styles available within our product range and are able to provide the system which best suits the individual engine.

The Truth About Electronic Diesel Tuning

The first rule is to beware of information printed in magazines, “Cash For Comment” rules in the media industry. Their interpretation of the “Advertising Standards” is that they do not need to verify information provided by an advertiser.

So if the advertiser claims their product is “Made in Australia” it will be printed. If the advertiser provides a dyno graph, it will be printed. Despite the same dyno graph being used for every vehicle on their web site, with the numbers changed on the side of the graph or the “same” curves move up or down the page to match their claims. You might notice a similarity in these graphs, but the claim from one company is that these are “real” dyno graphs of a Landrover, Toyota, BMW & Mercedes.

If an advertiser claims their product can communicate with different engine functions, without even having any connection to these functions, this will also be printed. They also claim to be connecting “Downstream” of the ECU. But in reality, are connecting between the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor and the ECU. They modify this signal and then send this modified signal to the ECU. So this means they have connected their product “Up-stream” of the ECU. This signal is only telling the ECU what the Fuel Pressure is in the Fuel Rail. This is the only connection these products make to the engine, it tricks the ECU to think the Fuel Pressure is lower than it really is, and it has no connection to the Air Flow Sensor or the Timing Sensor.

But we do understand that these companies spend a lot of money to get this level of support from these magazines. At the same time it is well known that products, which contain the least substance, must cover this deficiency with large advertising.

In their defence the magazines claim any liability rests with the person who supplied the information. As long as the magazines still sell, it does not matter to them, how they treat their loyal readership. This approach suits the magazine, because the only way to fight back is then to “Out-Spend” these other advertisers, in the same magazine.

But our ethics say this is wrong, magazines also have a responsibility to their readers.
